About Olympia

Olympia, the famous sanctuary of Ancient Greece, sits in Peloponnese. Olympia was devoted to Zeus and became the most important sports center in Greece. Its popularity lies upon the Olympic Games, the biggest nationwide celebration and a highly famous one world-wide, which was presented in Olympia every four years. The first discovers in Olympia are on the foot of mount Kronios, where the first sanctuaries were founded.

The first Olympic Games were presented here in 776 B.C. Soon the celebration of Olympia obtained a nationwide personality. The excellent development of the sanctuary started in the Archaic period. This is when the first massive structures of Olympia were designed like the temple of Hera, the Prytaneion, the Bouleuterion, the treasuries and the first stadium. The sanctuary ongoing into the Classical period, when the tremendous temple of Zeus (470-456 BC) and several other structures were assembled in Olympia, and the stadium shifted to the east, outside the Altis. In the Hellenistic period the progression of lay structures in Olympia, such as the gymnasium and palaestra, ongoing. Lastly, in Roman periods several current structures in Olympia were renovated and new ones designed, such as hot baths, magnificent estates and an aqueduct.
